Sitharaman convenes meeting of industry bodies on IPR today

Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has convened a meeting today of about 28 industry associations to deliberate on issues related to the National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy, reported PTI. The meeting will discuss issues like creating awareness of the policy in the country, an official said. The associations which would participate include CII, Ficci, PHDCCI, International Trademark Association, Laghu Udyog Bharati, Film and Television Producers Guild of India and Indian Motion Pictures' Producers Association. In May, the government announced the policy to incentivise entrepreneurship, promote creativity, innovation and curb manufacturing and sale of counterfeits. The policy, with the tagline 'Creative India: Innovative India', also calls for updating various intellectual property laws, including the Indian Cinematography Act, to remove anomalies and inconsistencies in consultation with stakeholders. The policy was formulated by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), under the ministry. One of the main focus of the policy was enhancing awareness in the country among all the stakeholders. The DIPP has already started this and the first phase was carried out in June and July. "The ministry would also take feedback of the stakeholders on the policy besides suggesting them to prepare an action plan for its implementation," the official added as per the PTI report.
