26/09/2016 00:57
The Indian Government has said that it has asked neighbouring China to import a wide range of items from it such as rice, sugar, maize and dried grapes in order to seek greater cooperation in agriculture trade. As per reports, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh met his Chinese counterpart Qui Dongyu on the sidelines of BRICS agri-meet here and asked China to consider importing these products from India. Commenting on the issue, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh told the media, "I am looking forward for more and more cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors between the two countries leading to further strengthening of bilateral relations." “China can explore the possibility of importing agricultural items including live plants, coconut, cashew nuts, banana, pepper, shorghum, coconut oil, oil cake, which India has a potential to export,” he added. The Minister also expressed satisfaction over the progress made in finalising a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China on sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) issues.

Parliamentary panel to examine Railway, General budget merger 26/09/2016 00:02

Parliamentary panel to examine Railway, General budget merger
26/09/2016 00:02
After the Cabinet's nod for ending a 92-year-old practice of presenting Railway Budget separately from the General Budget, the parliamentary panel on finance has decided to examine the move along with its ramifications thereof, as per the media reports. Recently, the Cabinet had decided to scrap a separate budget for railways and merge it with the General Budget, presentation of which would be advanced to spur spending and boost the economy, said the PTI report. According to the Lok Sabha bulletin dated September 22, the Committee on Finance has selected the “Budgetary Reforms including merger of Railways Budget with General Budget -- Ramifications thereof.” In a major overhaul of the budget process, the Cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi had also decided to do away with classifications of expenditure into Plan and Non-Plan, making the exercise simpler, added the media reports. Moreover, in order to facilitate early presentation of the Budget, the finance ministry had proposed that the Parliament Parliamentary Budget Session be convened sometime before January 25, a month ahead of the current practice, media reports has said. Additionally, the parliamentary panel headed by the Congress MP M Veerappa Moily, will review the all budgetary reforms. The move comes after the opposition party, Congress, termed the government’s decision to merge the 2 budgets as “cosmetic, superficial and non-substantive changes”.

GDP growth to top 8% on rains, reforms, says Panagariya 26/09/2016 00:01

GDP growth to top 8% on rains, reforms, says Panagariya
26/09/2016 00:01

Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya has said that a good monsoon, reforms and timely decision making by the Central Government will definitely push India’s growth beyond the 8 per cent mark in subsequent quarters of this fiscal, as per the media reports. Commenting on the matter, Panagariya said, quoted PTI that, “I am confident that it (GDP no.) will be over 8 per cent in subsequent quarters (this fiscal).” Panagariya further added that, “This will happen because there will be impact of reforms also (besides a good monsoon). We still have not seen (the impact of reforms). There were serious governance issues earlier. Projects were stuck. The decisions were not taken at the Centre.” During the April-June quarter, country’s growth rate dragged down to a six-quarter low of 7.1 per cent on the back of subdued performance of mining, construction and farm sectors. It was 7.9 per cent in January-March quarter. While, Indian economy expanded by 7.5 per cent in the April-June quarter of previous year. He admitted that 7.1 per cent is a slight dampener in the first quarter, and said, “It was slightly lower than my expectations. Q1 data did not have any impact of the good monsoon this year.”

Subject Length :

Word Count:

Question Count:

Reading Level:

(Franchising)

India, Greece ink MoU for air services pact
07/09/2016 17:23
India on Wednesday inked a preliminary pact with Greece for bilateral Air Services Agreement that proposes to allow unlimited points of call for domestic airlines in the European nation.
Seeking to improve international air connectivity for Indian carriers, the government has been entering into air services pacts with many countries besides making efforts to re-negotiate existing agreements.
Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey on Wednesday said India and Greece have signed an MoU for Air Services Agreement (ASA) under the 'open sky' policy.
"We have (proposed) to give six points of call and India will have unlimited points of call in Greece," he said on the sidelines of an event.
Once inked, it would be the first such ASA with Greece, which is known for its tourist spots and scenic beauty.
According to Choubey, this is also the first MoU with a country under the provisions of the new civil aviation policy.
According to the policy, the government would enter into an 'open sky' air services agreement on a reciprocal basis with SAARC nations as well as countries with territory located entirely beyond a 5,000 kilometre radius from New Delhi.
"Unlimited flights above the existing bilateral rights will be allowed directly to and from major international airports within the country as notified by Ministry of Civil Aviation from time to time," it said.
However, the points of call at other airports under the existing air service agreements would continue to be honoured till the same are renegotiated.
Meanwhile, the ministry would hold discussions with local airlines on bilaterals before starting negotiations with Dubai.
The ministry would have discussions with "domestic airlines on bilaterals before September 20... Before negotiating seat entitlements with Dubai," Choubey said.

The Indian Government has said that it has decided to include Internet broadcasting under the purview of the Copyright Act, a move that will benefit the music entertainment industry. Under the earlier provisions, 'broadcasting organisations' mainly covered radio and television. Commenting on the issue, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) told the media, "The provisions of section 31D (of the Copyright Act, 1957) are not restricted to radio and television broadcasting organisations only, but cover Internet broadcasting organisations also." It said representations have been received from various stakeholders as to whether the Internet broadcasting companies come under the purview of statutory licensing as per the provisions of Section 31D of the Act. As per reports, this section talks about statutory licence for broadcasting of literary and musical works and sound recording. "These representations were examined in consultation with ministries/departments concerned," it added.

Silver up on downbeat US non-manufacturing report 07/09/2016

Silver up on downbeat US non-manufacturing report
07/09/2016 08:55
Silver futures closed higher in the international market on Tuesday after the release of a very downbeat U.S. ISM non-manufacturing report for August. The weaker-than-expected ISM report comes on the heels of a slightly downbeat U.S. jobs report for August, which was released last Friday. This recent U.S. economic data plays right into the hands of the U.S. monetary policy doves, who do not want to see the Federal Reserve raise interest rates any time soon. Such a scenario would also be bullish for the precious metals markets.

Gold up on weak US dollar
07/09/2016 08:53
Gold futures closed higher in the international market on Tuesday as a fall in the U.S. service-sector index to its weakest level in over six years appeared to diminish the likelihood of a U.S. interest-rate hike this month, fueling a drop in the dollar. The debate over the speed and aggressiveness of Fed interest-rate changes has been pinned to each economic release but the payrolls report carried additional weight for financial markets. Prospects for higher interest rates can boost the dollar and dull the appeal of greenback-priced gold. Rising rates also can turn off investors from precious metals, which don’t bear a yield.

The overall consumer sentiment in the country fell by 4.62 per cent even as rural population expressed increased optimism following a favourable monsoon during August, latest data shows.
Consumer sentiments on the current economic conditions fell by 5.25 per cent while their expectations regarding the future fell by 4.2 per cent during August, according to data on consumer sentiments by BSE and CMIE.
"India consumer sentiment index fell by 4.62 per cent to 96.1 in August 2016," BSE said in a statement.
While urban consumer sentiments fell by 1.06 per cent, the same in rural India rose positively by 1.08 per cent last month, compared to July this year.
Consumer sentiments in urban areas regarding the current economic conditions deteriorated by 1.83 per cent and consumer expectations regarding the future worsened by 0.57 per cent for the month, BSE said.
On the other hand, index for rural sentiments on current economic conditions grew by 0.46 per cent and increased by 1.46 per cent on future expectations.
"It is interesting to note that Indian consumers are more optimistic about their future than their own assessment of their current economic condition," BSE Managing Director and CEO Ashish kumar Chauhan said.
"This greater hope in the future is evident in both urban and rural regions. Thus, while the overall sentiments in rural and urban regions are divergent, their relative perception regarding their own future converges to unambiguous optimism," he said.

NITI Aayog has said that it has made a case for strategic sale in as many as 44 public sector undertakings where the government can reduce its holding below 50 per cent by selling its stake.
As per reports, NITI Aayog's recommendation of strategic sale of these PSUs is part of the task entrusted to it by the government to suggest ways to divest Centre's stake in profit-making as well as loss making and sick units.
Commenting on the issue, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant told the media, "NITI Aayog has already recommended about 44 companies for strategic sale and that is going through a process. Dipam (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) is working on that, taking it forward.”
"But for us, it's an ongoing process, so we are looking at the second lot, the third lot and we will come out with recommendations," he added.
As per reports, under the strategic sale, government's stake is reduced to 0-49 per cent in a PSU which is also called privatisation.

Australia terms FTA negotiations with India as complicated
07/09/2016 15:18
According to media reports, the Australian government has signaled that the ongoing free trade negotiations (FTA) with India were “complicated” and that such a deal is no longer a major priority in the short term.
“On India, this is a complicated negotiation. Although the original aspiration was to knock it over in 12 months, that hasn't been possible. We're now in the process of undertaking a stocktake about where negotiations are at. So I'll keep pursuing India, but that's not our key priority”, Australia’s Trade Minister Steve Ciobo was quoted as saying to a TV channel in Melbourne, the PTI reported.
Instead, the top priority for the Australian government in the short term was to ink a FTA deal with Indonesia, which is already a significant economic and regional trading partner for Australia.
Ciobo’s comments come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull on the sidelines of the recently held G20 summit in China.
India and Australia have been bidding to strike a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) or FTA since 2011 as both sides look to bolster bilateral trade and investment.
Despite several rounds of negotiations aimed at liberalising trade and the services regime, eliminating non-tariff barriers and enabling investments, key differences in areas relating to duty cut on dairy products and wines have held back the conclusion of the negotiations.

GST, banks and infra top govt. priorities: FM

According to a report in media news agency Reuters, the country’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has stressed that the Modi government is stepping up efforts to accelerate progress on key tax reforms, fixing the ailing banking system and reviving stalled infrastructure projects, bolstering the outlook for Asia’s third biggest economy which expanded by 7.1 per cent in the April-June 2016 quarter.
Jaitley added that getting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) implemented on the target date of April 1, 2017 was among the top priorities of the Centre.
Touted as the country’s biggest tax reform since Independence, the GST will create a common market in India while also improve tax efficiency, and help bolster business and investor sentiment. India’s annual GDP could get an annual boost of up to 2 per cent under the new single indirect tax regime.
Jaitley underscored the need to revitalize the struggling banking sector grappling with a pile of toxic loans that have constrained credit growth. However, he dismissed any suggestions of selling off government stake in state-run lenders. The government is not planning to cut its stake in public sector banks below the threshold limit of 52 per cent, he said.
The Finance Minister also noted the urgency among policymakers to get stalled infrastructure projects moving that could provide immense benefits to the country’s 1.3 billion population.

India set to become pivot for high-tech manufacturing: UN
07/09/2016 12:29
India is on course to becoming a pivot for high-tech manufacturing amid favourable conditions for the growth of the sector in the wake of progress on key structural reforms, the United Nations has said in a new report.
“India's manufacturing output, which achieved impressive growth rates in the last quarters, experienced a second slight decline in a row but the prospects for India's manufacturing are conclusive, since India is on the path to becoming a pivot for high-tech world manufacturing”, the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) said in its 'World Manufacturing Production report', published quarterly.
In India, manufacturing output rose by 9.1 per cent in the first quarter of the ongoing fiscal, year-on-year, which was slower than the 9.3 per cent growth reported in the January-March 2016 quarter.
Even as the UN is optimistic over India’s manufacturing growth, it sees global manufacturing expansion slowing this year amid reduced financial support for productive activities.
Global manufacturing output is likely to rise by a tepid 2.8 per cent in 2016, the report said. Manufacturing growth in advanced nations is set to stand at a paltry 1.3 per cent this year, with that in developing countries at 4.7 per cent.
Asia seems to be becoming the new powerhouse of global manufacturing, with the region clocking an impressive 6.5 per cent growth in manufacturing output in the second quarter of 2016.
